Live Music is Back

Publication Design, Typographic Design, Design Exploration

Design is all about learning new techniques and making quick decisions. This project of creating New York Times magazine covers shows what different restrictions can create in terms of the same information. Restrictions included software, time, and materials.

Software & Time

Challenging yourself tends to bring upon the best outcomes and ideas, so for the following magazine covers I limited myself to either Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Indesign. I also set a time limit of 11 minutes.

Although these covers are by no means finished, I think I learned a lot about making quick decisions about style and color palette and working with each program individually.

Analogue & Non-Design Software

These two restrictions were probably the most challenging for me. I made one set with non-design software (Microsoft Office, Photobooth, etc.). and one set of completely analogue covers.

Once again, I don’t think these are finished in any way, but I really enjoyed the challenge of stepping out of my comfort zone to see what I could create with these restrictions.

Final

I took everything I learned from the previous covers and made two final magazine covers. I learned to make quick decisions, use different features on each program, and learn how to integrate some analogue material into my final designs.
