Is The Ocean a Soup?

Publication Design, Typographic Design

Is the Ocean a Soup is a publication based on a portion episode 55 of the podcast A Hotdog is a Sandwich titled “Is The Ocean A Soup? ft. Hank Green.” This publication was also a collaboration with another designer, Viann Ko.

After reviewing the podcast episode, Viann and I were keen on the publication design having a vibrant tone. Given the hosts' banter and laughter, our aim was to evoke a sense of amusement and connection through the design and typography, ensuring that viewers would feel the podcast's lively spirit in our publication.

Style Guidelines

We carefully selected a color palette and font type. These colors were chosen to mirror the vibrant and cheerful personalities of the podcast hosts while ensuring visual harmony. Additionally, we opted for a bold typeface that conveys the hosts' lively nature.

Page Design

The overarching style was designed to display this playfulness. The layout featured dynamic text arrangements, with font sizes shifting in response to the hosts' vocal dynamics, which then enhances the visual representation of their conversation.

After completing nearly 30 pages of the publication (click here to view the full pdf), we revisited our initial stylistic elements to create the cover design.

To complement the lighthearted nature of the publication's title, we hand painted various abstract patterns resembling ocean waves to be prominently featured on the cover. In order to maintain thematic continuity, we incorporated elements of these patterns throughout the rest of the publication.
